hey masto instance admins, what're the hosting costs for 10k users? do you know how much of your bandwidth and resources are used by federation? I'm curious how much it would cost to run a private mastodon island for individual nonprofits
@nire currently hosting msatodon.social costs around 200€ a month. I'd imagine you could probably get away with less hardware then they have, but I would say that it's probably a reasonable upper bound. (depending on how active you expect those 10,000 users to be—the majority of the cost is going to be capacity for *concurrent* users, not maximum)
the costs of having experienced sysadmin-y people who can maintain a large site are also not reflected in that, of course.
