how would I say "two of them"

does this work:

« Il y a trois personnes et deux d'eux sont heureux »

or does it need entre:

« Il y a trois personnes et deux d'entre eux sont heureux »

as a sidenote, French grammatical rules as taught in school require that when you're talking about a group of people and at least one of them is male you gender the whole group as male (so "deux d'entre eux" even if one of them is female)
you can use gender-inclusive pronouns to avoid that such as "elleux" (elles+eux) but most people sadly won't know what you're talking about :/

@luluberlu duolingo seems to default to elles, I guess because eux is more complicated (didn't get taught eux for a while), so I try to use it so I don't forget about it and use ils 😅

In this case it is best to use "deux d'entre elles" because it refers to "personnes", which is feminine.

But it is completely understandable (and tolerated) if you use "eux", in case the group of people is exclusively masculine, or there's at least one man and you don't use inclusive language (otherwise, "elleux").

If it was a spoken sentence I think I'd have noticed, and I would have been surprised to hear "eux" in that case :p

what if I used elles and the group was all masculine? does that work because "personnes" itself is feminine?
