The latest from Gandi -- I'm thinking that I should now transfer the domain back to Hover, unless someone else can recommend a decent domain registrar that *also* can handle .cat domains:
@woozle my domains are registered via portfast.co.uk, they appear to do .cat domains and I've never had any complaints

A couple of flags, though:
1. doesn't seem to be any way to create an account (presumably you have to register or transfer a domain in order to get started, as with many other registrars)
2. the price for .cat seems far too low, suggesting they haven't done their homework about the extra details involved
If it were just one or the other, I'd be tempted.
