lmao researching this and I see "we've seen other social media sites like ... Mastodon come and go"
but have we tho????
@Gargron I don't think people are capable of understand that this isn't the "open-sourced version of Twitter"
which is why they always come here and get disappointed
@guerrillarain @gargron The sad thing is we tend to use metaphor and analogy to describe things to other people. Just try to explain something like Mastodon without mentioning another social media network. It's difficult.
But we'll know we've arrived when folks say things like "It's like Mastodon but not as good." 😁
are people aware that social media sites don't just die because they themselves stop using them? object permanence is a thing, ya know.
@guerrillarain Not for Silicon Valley it isn't.
If it isn't the new shiny, it doesn't exist, and if it continues to exist despite their wishing it doesn't, it's inherently bad.
@bhtooefr @guerrillarain
Too fkin true.
I swear to god before I started using Masto, i saw two articles written a day apart that were like:
"Mastodon: the new hot shit"
"Why Mastodon is dead"
@somarasu @bhtooefr @guerrillarain mostly under the radar of the SV / hacker news / finance opinionator nexus: a good place to be.
@guerrillarain I don't know, identi.ca maybe? That came and went, sort of.
@JordiGH oh no, I meant that Mastodon hasn't gone anyway haha
this is in an article talking about how vero may fail like mastodon did, but mastodon hasn't failed lol
@guerrillarain Oh. Well, here we are, the failures.
(clarification to this toot: I'm not saying that there aren't other sites that have come and gone as Masto, I'm saying that Masto hasn't "gone" anywhere.)
@guerrillarain 😦
