I loathe cigarettes and generally feel like smokers are assholes, but liberal regulation like this drives me to a blinding fury. Every law is backed by a thug with a gun. The talent liberals have for studiously avoiding this reality is equal parts astonishing and sickening.

Capitalism may demand research into certain fields of science yeah, but it also means that the corporations that benefit from said research also don't want to invest in it, in order to "reduce costs" and "stay competitive" (which actually means just putting more money into buybacks and dividends ie $$$ for shareholders and CEOs)

it's is exactly how you end up with stuff like the National Nanotechnology Initiative -research for private businesses, funds courtesy of the US taxpayer (hello iPhone)
