can we try... emptying a think tank and scrubbing off some algae

"Google’s willingness to spread cash around the think tanks and advocacy groups focused on internet and telecommunications policy has effectively muted, if not silenced, criticism of the company over the past several years"

"Google is very aggressive in throwing its money around Washington and Brussels, and then pulling the strings," Mr. Lynn said. "People are so afraid of Google now."

I expect the deal with W3C and DRM was quite similar. Either you tow the line or lose the funding.

@aron Right.... a lot of people got/get into it for the /art/ of it, the glory of watching computations spin out from under your thumb.

Since it became quite profitable to program (vs a lot of other careers), a lot of people are there now to crush code and make phat cash - or to make 6 figs and do a 9-5.

I think if we peeled back a lot of the current issues in f/oss and the software scene, these differing base motivations would be seen as root causes of the fighting.

I can't help but wonder if my voice was good, would I not have been asked out of the blue about trans issues from a colleague I'm not out to?

We were chatting in a group about terminology, and why the word neurotypical exists, and I said it was because if you divide the world into "autistic and not-autistic" or "autistic and normal," you're implying autistic people are by nature not normal and therefore odd. And he turned to me and said, "So I guess it's like cis in the trans community."

Like, I get he's gay, but that doesn't mean he gets to publicly clock me over lunch.
