So, which virtualization platform do I use for a playground system where I quickly want to spawn test VMs, possibly with nested virtualization? The platform should mostly get out of my way.

I work with VMware professionally, so using the free ESXi would be an option (but without vCenter I'd have to use the vSphere fat client for some things). VirtualBox seems popular with people who use Vagrant. I've somewhat played with Xen years ago. Plain KVM? KVM with Proxmox on top?

@galaxis I don't think virtualbox can do nested virtualisation

@galaxis Oracle's only a $200 billion corporation, can't expect them to properly support their open source projects

@vi Tbh I'm somewhat surprised that VirtualBox has managed to survive within Oracle for such a long time, with so little license restrictions. Someone must not be paying attention...
