@vi Old English had -en as the plural, like brethren and sistren.

@vi History! The way English makes plurals has changed several times over the last thousand years, and on "child" some of them have kind of accreted. I believe the plural of "child" was originally "childer", and then as the plural changed "childer" was taken as singular, or at least weird, and repluralized as "children." I don't know why "children" stuck instead of becoming "childs" or "childrens" though.
