This is an incredible revelation that I still haven’t fully wrapped my head around. Level design requires the same kind of composition that goes into any other kind of art. You want landmarks, so the viewer knows what’s important and what’s not. You want hidden details, to reward viewers who pay closer attention. You want things to connect together and be revisited, so the world seems to evolve as the viewer spends more time with it.

so when you see irma and jose in the news. when you see corporations making token efforts or denying the severity of climate change. when you see the right repeatedly obstructing any effort at the barest mitigation of climate change, which our actions are actively worsening.

remember that we've known about all of this since at least 2003, and they have chosen the world that is burning and sinking and in which their bank accounts have an extra zero on the end.

most of the current atmospheric carbon and methane was primarily created by industrialized nations, i.e. nations which can afford infrastructure like FEMA and other kinds of disaster relief, and which are not existentially threatened by climate change.

the victimized nations, those struggling out of colonial pasts and perennially overlooked, have been doomed with barely a second thought.

even putting aside rising sea levels. island nations like antigua and barbuda and the others in the carribean are directly and existentially victimized by this aspect of climate change.

the cost of carbon emissions (which numerous studies have shown to be the primary factor in the actively-observed greenhouse effect) is not some abstract "green score." it's human lives, in the thousands and tens of thousands. it's the very existence of some countries.

the thing about raising the temperature of the sea is that you're injecting energy directly into it

hurricanes are powered hot water. if you've ever watched a meteorologist talk about a hurricane on the news you're probably aware of this. a cat 1 becomes a cat 3 becomes a cat 5 when passing over hot water.

the oceans are continuing to heat up. hurricanes are extreme as a direct result of this.

antigua and barbuda have already been passed over. it's unclear so far what the total extent of the damage is, but barbuda may be near-completely destroyed. expect the fatality rate to be high.

puerto rico is in the path. it's going to be hit hard. is being hit hard right now. entire towns may be destroyed.

cuba's likely going to be hit, pretty badly, too.

let's talk about irma.

while the news around irma has been focused primarily on its effects on the US (passing through florida, perhaps grazing georgia) -- which, to be sure, is an important concern -- what's been largely glossed over is that the island nations between its origin and its eventual dissipation are going to be devastated. it's a category 5 hurricane and it's passing right over the Caribbean.
