"Mario" is from Latin "Marius", probably related to Mars, the god of war; "Maria" is from Hebrew מִרְיָם via Greek Μάριαμ.
In the last century or two, people have back-formed "Marius" as a masculine "Maria" or "Maria" as a feminine "Mario", but these are outliers.
