Everything involving the Ferengi in Star Trek makes me intensely uncomfortable.
@bstacey I can't figure out if the fact that most of the Ferengi actors are Jewish makes things better or far, far worse.
@bstacey TBF, I like the idea of the Federation's luxury space communists having a foil in hardcore Gordon Gekko types, but they really needed to be
A) a true "anti-federation" of multiple species
B) not super transparent Jewish stereotypes (with a few Arab traits sprinkled in because why not)
@tobascodagama It would have been interesting if the various random species we saw in space bars (in TNG episodes like "Unification" and "Gambit" and such) were organized into a trading league, with the Ferengi playing the primary role.
@bstacey Alternatively, reveal that the Ferengi were normal and well-adjusted -- utopian, even -- until they were sold warp drive tech and taught the Rules of Acquisition less than a generation ago by a human named Harvey Mudd.
@tobascodagama They started in a bad place, they were never fully redeemed, and honestly, they've grown worse by association with Very Scientific Dudebros who call women "females".
