the issue isn't that AI are inexplicable, but that corpers have chosen to trust inexplicable tooling as a means of disenfranchising workers. consider how facebook used its moderation teams solely to train its moderator AI, and then phased out the humans. facebook cannot pretend "it's just the algorithm" absolves them of responsibility when that algorithm turns out to be racist as fuck. they built it. they trained it. they are responsible.

legislators wants "explainable" AI so that they can hold someone to account but uhhh

when a statistician makes a call based on the tools they used, you hold the statistician to account. if the statistician cannot hold their tools to account, they need better tools. they do not get a pass because "it's just what the data shows" because they made the conscious choice to trust their tools' interpretation of the data.

i can't stand researchers creating these automated diviners -- identifying sexuality, transness, legal identity, from training sets copped and bought without consent -- and then washing their hands when people call them out for facilitating a panopticon. "look, it's just what the data shows" doesn't absolve you of creating lists only useful to those who wish us harm.
