Reading today's Magic story and... there's something about the way they write Liliana that consistently bothers me.

There's something about the very specific way that she's detached and lighthearted about her trauma that doesn't ring authentic to me, and I can't figure out why. It's like... the levity makes sense as an outward mask, but it also carries into her internal monologue and it fails at sounding jaded?

@FragileVal yeah, this not-actually-subtle sort of bias is kind of everywhere. cis people make a disproportionate number of popular things, so way too many popular things have a lot of unconscious cis biases lurking in them, and... yeah.

What art books are: Women have smaller necks and narrower shoulders than men. They're about half a head shorter but [blah blah blah...]

What art books should be: Don't fall into the rut of only drawing characters with white-coded facial features. Here's a picture of a goo girl happily taking her progesterone pills. Binders don't entirely make someone's breast tissue vanish, and affect the draping of shirts in X and Y way[...]

@venndiagram yeah. and even if an art guide on tumblr or dA is really, really good, it's usually overshadowed by the way larger torrent of anatomy guides done by more classically and/or normatively trained artists

@starkatt @typhlosion I woulda gone with "lantern mice" myself, but mine is oriented more for the baby pokemon and "camp stove badger" is more for the final evolution

@starkatt @typhlosion cyndaquil was always the starter i chose in crystal, and was the starter i gave the protagonist of my pokemon fanfic. the cyndaquil line is a good, nice bunch of pokemon.

I keep mulling over this conversation I had with the boyf yesterday. I was going through an art instruction book, reading a section about "these are the differences between boys and girls [sic]" and I mentioned how dysphoric I felt going through it. (Their response upon skimming it: /same/)

We started talking about how the importance of having a solid grasp of anatomy for figure drawing reinforces gender essentialist/white supremacist beauty norms, and I just wish there were some art book that taught you explicitly how to draw non-normativity: furries, queer and disabled people, people of color, etc. It's urgently needed.

@typhlosion @starkatt @shoofle at the risk of being trite, everyone who jumped into the identity-variant pool started outside it. we are literally unrecognizable from what/how/who we thought we were this time in 2010. and imo, that doesn't have to be the case for you, and it's okay if it's enough, but it's a shame not to give yourself permission to explore at all?
