Hoi all mastodonians learning #language or #languages or interested in #linguistics! Many of you may use #Duolingo, and no wonder, it is an amazing tool to learn new languages. But alas, it has been deteriorating lately, I've been told, and it may be that Duolingo's business model and proprietariness may hinder its usefulness in the future.

So an open source alternative would be nice.

And today I found #OpenWords (http://openwords.com/). I'm in no way affiliated with it and I don't know about its pros and cons, but looks promising. What's your take on it? Could it be something that could outgrow Duolingo and become THE language learning platform?

Encountered a Rock Band 4 bug that forced me to play only on-disc songs in Career Mode. Hey, here are some reasons I dislike Cake - "Short Skirt, Long Jacket":
- I liked the song as a gross teenager, and now seek to reject that part of me whenever possible
- It is straight-up awful to expect a variety of specific traits from a partner
- If the Citibank/Chrysler mentions are not paid product placement, they may as well have been
- Cake singer's ideal woman is the most bourgeois person imaginable

- She is described only as a "girl" and not a woman, despite being supposedly revered for her professionalism, cleverness, and self-confidence
- The desired traits are described through similes ("fingernails that shine like justice"), each one putting her further and further up on a pedestal
- "uninterrupted prosperity", "smooth liquidation", "good dividends": his sugar-momma ambitions are laid bare
- "long jacket": a metaphor for a shell of professionalism he wants to penetrate
- Vibraslap
