use an external service like giphy or imgur

not really into the idea of making gifs and having masto take ownership of and index it for others. i mostly stopped making gifs after twitter and tumblr started doing that. i've made sweet gifs in my day, too.

@spinach this is the best idea but also the Stallmanists will cry at us for not using purely FOSS stuff and will revolt which is stupid

if we had plugin support we could easily make a giphy plugin for instances to add or subtract if they're really that against using giphy or tenor

@shel wouldn't any patent on gif be expired by now? sure would be nice if more browsers supported apng or webp tho

giphy plugin could be cool, long as posting gifs here didn't index them there. idk how that works.

@spinach hmmmm there must be a way to do like one-way giphy? like it uses the gif but doesn't send any back? Privacy Badger reports 0 tracking elements on Mastodon instances and I'd like to keep it that way and not report stuff back to giphy

but idk that might be their profit model so maybe they wouldn't let us
