So is there no way to run a Masto instance without port forwarding?
We are super disappointed :<
SO MUCH WORK AND HELP FROM OTHER PEOPLE
@ashkitten We don't tho haha
We just have a laptop
@spiderrobotpig :( i wish i could help you
@ashkitten You did a whole lot :3
@spiderrobotpig you need to be able to run a web server, so no. you also need either a static IP or dynamic dns
@spiderrobotpig I vaguely remember there being reverse proxy services? but I can't remember what any of them are called
@spiderrobotpig oh noooo but I guess you probably learned a lot already?
@bea Yeah but still wanna cry tho haha
@spiderrobotpig what if
you started a tor mastodon instance
because you can start hidden services without portforwarding
and if you tell every server you're at one of those onion bridges from web to tor, you can get it working like that
(please note that if you do this, im pretty sure it will cause random sysadmins to have nightmares about this specific setup just because of it existing. this is eldritch networking abuse, basically)
@boots CAN YOU HELP US WORK THIS ELDRICH ABOMINATION OF AN INSTANCE BECAUSE WE DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THOSE WORDS MEAN BUT IT SOUNDS COOL
@spiderrobotpig basically what this implies is
oh god im going to have to draw a diagram and it's going to probably have to appreciably convey the pure horror of how this works
@boots This sounds appropriate for a instance called witches.academy tbf
USING THE DARK ELDRITCHY ABOMINATION OF TOR TO DO OUR BIDDING
@spiderrobotpig look i wouldnt use this for anything that doesnt include a drawing of cthulhu on the front page
@boots Like, we can make that happen.
We do draw things
@boots @spiderrobotpig how fast would that be tho, cuz tor is usually pretty slow for me :P
@ashkitten @spiderrobotpig uh itd probably be slow as Fuck
@boots @ashkitten But also DARK and kinda awesome and we could make it better when we're not homeless
@ashkitten @boots Seriously though if this is possible we should do this and the thing will be cthulhu and grimdark Rose and Grimbark Jade
@spiderrobotpig okay first this is a good diagram of how hidden services work
basically you're just relaying through a node:
https://www.torproject.org/docs/hidden-services.html.en
@boots This is hella going over our head tho
@spiderrobotpig i just typed out an explanation and realized that like
god i don't think this would work???? like i don't know???
this is like using quicklime to heat a pool: sure it might work but like there's so many things wrong here
@boots WE WILL RULE ALL OF THE INSTANCES USING ELDRICH TECHNOLOGY
@spiderrobotpig CTHULHU IS PLEASED
@boots So, we need to download Tor, we assume, and then somehow get the domain to point there along with the masto instance?
@spiderrobotpig you can just use ngrok, but it'll probably be pretty slow.
You can get really cheap hosting on digital ocean though
@halkeye We tried that, and it's not working.
We can do it on digital ocean tho?
@spiderrobotpig I make no promises, but you should be able to host an instance on there yea
@halkeye Yeah, we found a tutorial :3
@spiderrobotpig You can tunnel if you have a remote server!
