Une Goupelin Autiste @spiderrobotpig

I'm really starting to think that French is gonna be harder to learn than Japanese tbh

Japanese is consistent as heck

@Brianza_quiro I mean, I'm liking it, but this is way more overwhelming than teh nihongos

@spiderrobotpig yeah, but numerals... Really, one way of counting flat things, people, ... REALLY?! :)

@jenesuispasgoth I will grant you that numerals are garbage, but you can just use the -tsu marker and people will pretty much understand. You'll just sound pretty noobish

@spiderrobotpig well I believe speaking Japanese is indeed relatively "easy". Writing and reading it and learning the ~2000 kanjis you need on average, on the other hand...

Note: I did take lessons a while back, and I forgot almost everything. :)

@jenesuispasgoth Yeah, speaking is SUPER easy.

Reading and writing is the hard part, but even that you can get down in about 6 months with daily practice

@spiderrobotpig French has a lot of dumb rules that make zero sense. Good luck

@indecisivetwat Yeah, Spanish is so much. I tried for a couple of years and I can't even order anything. I can read it okay though

@spiderrobotpig My only complaint about there being so much French on Mastodon is that it seems the Spanish has stopped and that was the language I was more invested in.

@indecisivetwat Was there a bunch of Spanish on Masto before?

I kind of assumed there would be and was acutally surprised at the amount of french

@spiderrobotpig For, like, a couple days there was just a buttload of Spanish.

Those days are gone now.

@indecisivetwat That's kinda sad tbh :(

Like, I don't have a huge interest in learning Spanish, but I'm sad that it's gone

@spiderrobotpig @indecisivetwat I'd probably get more use out of learning Spanish living in the Southeastern US.

@spiderrobotpig @indecisivetwat I took three years of Spanish, at the end of which my class had covered half a year's textbook material.

Our Spanish teacher certainly knew the language, she just doesn't know how to teach it

@optimajohnny @spiderrobotpig Teaching is a skill unto its own. The world would be far better educated if we all understood this and hired people accordingly.

@indecisivetwat @spiderrobotpig I'm trying to learn it since I'm trying to be a pen and paper RPG DM, and so much of that is teaching on the fly when you don't have a single consistent group

@spiderrobotpig Actually, I am trying to learn Japanese right now - do you have suggestions for good resources?

@math_foo Find music in a similar genre that you like and listen to it to get better at parsing the language.

Anki is amazing, and Kanjidamage is one of the best ways to learn kanji in my opinion.

Also, I was an AJATT kid, but learning words with kanji is probably better tbh.

@spiderrobotpig has any area of the world spent as much time conquering and reconquering itself as western/central europe? Even those of our languages that try to be "pure" are such infinite mismatches of influences

@optimajohnny Yeah, I feel like there are definitely pros and cons there, but it's a lot

@spiderrobotpig English is my favorite language just because its rules are so bendable and breakable in expressive ways, and that's a direct consequence of everyone and their niece's cat invading the British isles and adding their rules to the stew

@optimajohnny Yeah, I definitely like the flexibility of English. I do feel like it's partly a barrier to entry tho tbh

@spiderrobotpig relax and breathe
A French guy that really likes Us and U.K.

@RankXerox Thanks :3

I'll get it, it's just so much haha

@spiderrobotpig if you want to train right there, I can help 😉

@RankXerox Thanks :3 I'll definitely do that once I move away from Google Translate haha

@spiderrobotpig There is a bit of consistency in the exceptions in French. Almost all of them avoid some lack of elegance that following the rules would cause.

Ask yourself which option sounds nicer and then go with that one.

@timbowman I guess that makes sense.

That will probably be easier once I get more used to French tbh

@spiderrobotpig as with anything, the more you practice, the easier it gets.
