Seems pretty quiet, at first. But checking the room's settings, it seems one's 'personal timeline' can be a little quiet at first.
You flip to 'federated timeline' and users snap into view. Most users are content with the generic body-that-wears-avatar-mask, which always struck you as looking like the Spy in TF2's little obviously fake paper masks. Some have custom VR/AR avatars, and they range from "human bodies" to "absolutely indescribable cosmic horror".

It smiles -- well, the tag for the animation says 'smiling', but several of the eyes shift into odd places and an empty voidgash opens that is SORT of like a smile -- and waves a few tendrils back. "Hey! New to Mastodon?"

A series of the eyes shut and close quickly while two fresh ones appear from nowhere, and some of the closed ones open, then close again. The animation is tagged 'wink'. "Thanks! Took forever to get all the gel shaders and stuff working, let me tell you. So how'd you come across the place?"
