Every time someone falls, remember: You could not have saved her, because we cannot save anyone. We can only be there to help, while they struggle to save themselves. And if they don't, if they can't, it's never, ever, going to be your fault. (or theirs.)

We've reached that point of Halloween where the neighborhood gets surreal. Little to no traffic noise, lots of screaming.

My data is old. They passed "hundreds" years ago; nowadays they're seeing thousands of trick-or-treaters every year.

My side of the street gets very few trick-or-treaters so I didn't get much candy. Soon I will walk literally one block to help out my friends who see *hundreds*.

A friend dropped her kid at my house so she can go to a grown-up function tonight. We sent her off with a loan of one laser tag pistol and a pair of six-inch knee-high platform boots.

Who wants to play a horror roleplaying game? One that's dark and tragic and yikes?

Listening to all this policing of "queer" -- and I really don't disagree, for the most part.

But I also think of my mostly-IDs-as-straight friend and how he's clashed with queer gatekeepers over the years and now that his partner of thirty years is out as genderqueer (surprising absolutely no-one) and I wonder how we could have supported him better over the years, while his queerness wasn't his to disclose, while neither of them *had the words yet* to explain who they were.

Gulp. I sent a couple of messages today expressing interest in things that are largely outside my comfort zone. And so now I'm compulsively checking for responses every few minutes...
