LB so I just finished reading "Legends of the Ancient Web" and I recommend it so much I'll link it at the bottom of this:

A few highlights for me:
***
In less than four decades, radio had completed the journey from fledgling technology, to nerdy hobby, to big business, to potent political weapon.
***
But being ashamed of your own business model is a clear warning that you’re not working on the side of the angels.

Outcomes matter, not intentions.
***
the parts about early hams made me think of y'all although I know the world has real hams too--despite all the regulation and licensing. <3

Another sobering talk from Maciej Ceglowski. He's shaping up to be a good candidate for "conscience of the tech industry."

@ruth “thanks, i have to practice a lot”

@gannet @inkdroid thanks so much! She'd be very happy if she has a lot of fanfic folks around, I think. She's really not married to twitter but I wanna lure her over here because I think she's mastodon weird. we mostly talk on slaaaaaaaaack so I was missing her :P

@naga @jaycie wow, that's really something! Actually, my husband is the son of a therapist and has done his own and is generally pretty self-aware and I find that it definitely makes him a good partner to have.

Sometimes I want to respond to compliments with “thanks, I’ve had a lot of therapy.” It’s culturally weird and sounds dismissive but... I don’t want people to get confused and think I got here on my own. That’s not for every compliment, but... there’s a number of things for which therapy has made me a much more functional person.

LB My wife likes to say that one of the reasons she married me is my "therapiness." The self-awareness, clarity of communication, and other skills that come from a lot of therapy.

@jaycie @ruth

Today I finished reading Programming is Forgetting. It was really good. I think the analysis about what early hacker bros did to Margaret Hamilton was both e-x-c-e-l-l-e-n-t for making her point about the limitations of that ethic. It also got me pretty pissed. If you're at all involved with programs/programming/data/etc., I'd recommend it: opentranscripts.org/transcript

@inkdroid yeah, it's definitely the aim. And I know she can really self-federate... I just want her to have a decent dive-in experience if I lure her over here. I'm hoping there's other people like her who do fanfic + romance noveling & such.

"The interdisciplinary nature of the program inherently fosters both integrity and diversity" -- what?????

ok, more positively! folks on wandering shop -- does it seem like it would be a good place for a writer friend?

police and prosecutors steal more through "civil asset forfeiture" than all "property crime" combined

This also means I'm in a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde mentality.

Dr. Jekyll, aka "fuck capitalism this system is unjust,"

and Mr. Hyde, aka "okay, I will submit that form as soon as possible."

I feel like I am a cog in the capitalist machine and I am playing by their rules and have learned to understand them because I have no choice in order to achieve my goals.
