@ardaniel I'm at an event in NorCal with folks from the Getty and it's... a bit shaky for them and then for us. Both for the institute and their homes.

@ardaniel I'm glad that you're able to do that! With today's fires, I've been upset and worried for folks who are being made to drive through.

@okiekiki yes! And if rest gives you back spoons yay, but otherwise laundry is laundry!!

People often disparage ideas as "just reinventing the wheel".

"The wheel" isn't a concrete thing; it's an abstract concept. Actual physical wheels have specific purposes that are usually exclusive.

Sometimes what's available is a wagon wheel, and what you need is a bicycle wheel. Or just a larger wagon wheel. New implementations are being designed all the time.

That's not "reinventing"; that's re-engineering. There's nothing redundant about it.

@vfrmedia @qwertystop yeah, my church is part of a winter network that extends shelter services. It runs entirely on labor and funds of folks in the church.

@vahnj It's place by place so I really don't know about that. The demographics of bell ringers is fairly standard, but how they're treated is local (just like some shelters have trans folks and won't let them freeze but will be shitty to them).

@amsomniac @melaininpony that as well. I wouldn't give unless mine were explicitly open about being welcoming (and non-abusive), but I am also aware bell ringers don't have control either way.

Appendix to friendly reminder since I have chars:

1. Salvation army is transphobic/homophobic & you shouldn't give money to bell ringers.

2. If it's bell ringers vs. "officers" (yes, ugh, church militant and they have name tags) they're not IN the church and may be experiencing homelessness or doing some kind of rehab and at the mercy of the Salvation Army. So be gentle with refusal/don't hold them accountable for the policies they're probably under too (like being forced to pray to eat, being made to sit through sermons, etc.). They are often extremely vulnerable folks doing their best to survive.

2/2 Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting --
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
