Ah shit all my older male coworkers gave me (and the other folks in our dept) chocolate. But I haven't seen anything from the other younger women. (we have a weird and very collegial age/gender split) do I... do nothing? I mean except thank them.
@webmind I don't think there's necessarily any rules... I don't have any issues w/ the chocolate as gift since it's dept-wide but I don't know the gifting practices.
@ruth I meant the unwritten ones, what people do, the norms or existing practises.
My suggestion is to throw them overboard and be kind and true to yourself. It's when I think people are the most beautiful.
Ofcourse it can create a mess, confuse people and be scary...
@ruth I wish I had an answer, but I can say that feels really awkward.
@ruth FWIW, if established colleagues don't say something up front about gifting practices (formal or informal) than I'd go with a nice thank you and leave it there. Unless you just want to bring something in for everyone.
@okiekiki yeah, perhaps I'll take it under advisement for next year. It shouldn't be hard to do but I'm still adjusting.
@ruth *nods* That's one of the rarely-talked-about weird bits about starting in a place in the autumn.
@okiekiki I should remember this for giving advice to other folks and stuff.
@ruth ignore the rules and be kind and honest?
