i gotta say. ghost's suggestion of call of cthulhu where its a woman in a very nice dress convincing you that she murdered everyone in this small english town with magic and you have a fantasy stat instead of a sanity stat is actually remarkably viable

if you gain a large amount of fantasy at one time you roll on a table and one of the results is your character crying and pointing at the source of their conflict while shouting any theories that come to mind

@raindare i barely know anything abotu call of cthulhu btu i would fuckign play this game

@kaguya its not great, being based on lovecraft, and a big element is that you don't get very much control over hwat your character does or their situation (contrast dungeon world). you pick your actions but losing sanity causes your character to suffer the vagaries of Epic Ableism and theyll often fail to do things or be forced to do things you might not want

@raindare this doesnt... sound like a game. tihs sounds like one person telling a story and when you try to do somethign they slap your hand and say No, you die

raindare @raindare

@kaguya @voyagerwitch because it usually is. it's a style of play that's largely GM-versus-players, which was more popular in the 70s or 80s. the goal isn't "find out what happens" (as in dungeon world), it's either "survive cthulhu" or "use cthulhu to kill the players".

@voyagerwitch @kaguya the sanity mechanic, aside from being ableist, is designed to negatively reinforce doing dangerous or interesting things, and if you want your character to survive to the end of the campaign, you're supposed to "smartly" stay in the background

@kaguya @voyagerwitch i guess, ultimately, it's a horror tabletop game, and so it's "essential" to the game that you're forced into an uncomfortable and deadly situation but confronting it can be just as bad for your mental health (or existence) but it's mmmmmmmmm not actually fun imo.

@voyagerwitch @kaguya the game needs to be about someone slapping your hand and going No, you die or else you dont feel insignificant and cowed by the eldritch horrors and then it isnt horror. i think thats the idea. the idea fucking sucks, but that's what i think it is

@raindare @kaguya i think dw also has a ruleset for adversarial play but it probably sucks
