I have learned through my work that moderation/lack thereof is a zero sum game. permitting behaviour like crass come-ons, aggressive arguments, blatantly offensive opinions, etc., drives other people away.

It's really a question of which crowd you want to drive away: a) ppl who are aggressive and offensive, or b) ppl who are shyer and unwilling to put up with aggression/offence. you cannot have both. there is no neutral middle way.
