One of the main things that drives people away from twitter is harassment, ie its not nice, if twitter was able to deal with this problem it could presumable be bigger.
Secondly mastodon is much larger than gnu social ever was, and why was it able to atract more people? i got the impression that a lot of people joined because it was presented as a nicer alternative to twitter, something that wasn't an option for gnu social.
there is an issue with how big individual instances can be before they are unmanageable, but that doesn't mean the mastodon network cant be big
So tumblrs just decided to put everything lesbian related under a "sensitive media" warning, and like all other social medias, nazis, porn, white supremacists etc. are not sensitive in any way. But lesbians being positives about themselves is sensitive.

The fire at Grenfell tower does not come down to blaming one man with a faulty fridge, if thats the case. It comes down to poor ppl being forced to buy faulty fridges in the first place instead of having access to workin appliances. It comes down to lack of safety in the structure of this building. It annoys me when people defend people like proudhon saying oh the racism, sexism ect doesn't affect his politics/ideas etc because it does, and what makes the good stuff *his* anyway? As if none else had similar ideas independently and he wasn't influenced by anyone. It's ridicules, people who call themselves anarchists just assuming one guy invented the whole thing out of nothing, completely ignoring the contributions of thousands of people because it never occurs to them that it wasn't all invented by one special guy
