Finally, this is an entirely Eurocentric telling of SF without any glance (so far) outside the borders. Maybe what's going on here is uniquely European, and the genre laid out doesn't have parallels or forbears in the Islamic world, China, or elsewhere, but that's assumed without being mentioned (so far).
@Jsuttonmorse @creatrixtiara the wikipedia entry for history of science fiction includes precursors from around the world, but it seems to completely ignore modern none Euro American scientific fiction, which you can find if you search for the specific country + science fiction
