I bought a few cheapo ESP8266 boards (wemos mini clones) from AliExpress but for some reason I can't get them working with my previous cheerlights code. I might work at it a bit more but I also bought a Huzzah from Adafruit just like my last one so that had better work.

Use a Feather Huzzah (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2821). Solder the door sensor on 13 and ground. Ignore the other battery stuff and use a USB wall charger.

Grab the latest version of the Adafruit IO library for Arduino and use this example as a basis: https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_IO_Arduino/tree/master/examples/adafruitio_00_publish
