"Facebook Dives into Home Device Market with Video Chat Product Named 'Portal'"

"According to people familiar with Facebook’s plans, Portal will be equipped with a wide-angle lens that is capable of recognizing individual faces and associating them with their Facebook accounts."

Fuck you Mark

@Gargron I'm not on Facebook, but can't understand why the angry reaction.

People make their choices to be there, and to publish all that information, and to tag people on photos.

People make a choice to bring such a device into their homes.

If someone cares so little about their #privacy, it's their own fault.

@Gargron @ricardojmendez

The problem is that it's like second hand smoking.

They choose this, but I am also affected because now I can't visit their home or enter businesses that also choose to do this.

I have to avoid being photographed with people if I choose not to have a shadow profile on Facebook and be automatically analyzed for relations with people and who am I seen with.

With a company as large as Facebook, your choice is no longer a choice at all.

@polychrome @Gargron Second-hand smoking is a good example. I hang out with people who smoke, but I choose not to hang out with people who'd smoke around me.

If someone has such a disregard for my health/privacy, I'm better off spending my time with other people.

@Gargron @ricardojmendez I would normally agree but while I do not know about the social situation in your country, in mine this is no longer an option.

Facebook has become an inescapable social norm. Refusing to participate makes me an outlier and I have barely found anyone else who is like this in my area.

So I am glad that your social environment permits you to avoid participation and hope this privilege will continue despite the efforts to erode it.

@polychrome @Gargron Back when I was based in Romania I heard the exact same "inescapable social norm" argument about smoking.

There's more interesting people out there than I have available time, so this becomes just another criteria.

Nothing's inescapable. Some choices are just harder to select for.
