I can't stop thinking about the sweetheart who seemed like he'd escaped from a Wes Anderson film, dressed perfectly as a pastry chef, standing at a Pike Place Market table done up like a pastry counter with shelves of donut shaped cat and cinnamon bun (🐇) ✨plush✨ frens.

When I picked one, out came his tongs to gently move my new friend into a wax pastry bag. He paused to whisper a few encouraging words to the little ✨plush✨ before handing them to me.

Postdocs at U of Washington (of which I am one) have been trying to unionize since last fall, against opposition from UW. Yesterday, I participated in a bring-your-laptop "work-in" at the president's office, and today UW said they wouldn't stand in the way any more of a unionization vote. ✊😀

Capitalism dictates that pricing is determined by an inverse relationship between supply and demand— if supply is high and demand is low, then prices will fall, whereas conversely, if supply is low and demand is high, prices will increase.

There are major problems with letting artificially created phenomena— and supply and demand are both— determine the value of something, however, with no consideration for human labor and other production costs.
