@amsomniac that addition makes a weird shape! kind of a saddle? which would make curl invariant to saddles and translations

@amsomniac (quick thoughts) you're taking a derivative, so you'll lose constant offsets, and then information is destroyed in the subtraction of derivatives. in Cartesian coordinates curl won't change if you make equal additions to both dFz/dy and dFy/dz (e.g. by adding (y k^ and z j^ to your vector field) and so on for all similar pairs...

@aparrish this is awesome stuff! I do optimization usability research, and can commiserate: jury-rigged hybrid algorithms perform annoyingly well in engineering too, unless there's a clear convex subproblem (...falling into the shop talk singularity...)

@iona @aparrish I respect him a lot, but struggled to find a useful for-whom and for-what-purpose in the article; if it was Masto inside baseball, I feel like it would have been better as a Masto thread.

@aparrish @iona yeah, I think Ethan's academic and worst-case angle here is pretty unhelpful; I don't disagree with anything said in his original article (the MF thread looks...bad...) but I think he might be assuming, and then not saying much about, the positive aspects of federation and decentralization? :-/
