This book blooms with ideas and acute observations, and I read it in one sitting delightedly cycling between / "nice, what's that?" / "where's it going?" / "OH NO" /.

Science fiction in Lagos, Nigeria; optimistic about Change and people (defined broadly); cynical about fear and fervency.

In LAGOON a lot of bad things happen to good people in ways that accomplish nothing, amongst chaos and growth. Many things are dismantled. Some things are dismantled by building a different, better thing next to them that presents a better vision of the world, and so I would say that this book is hopeful.

@ghost_bird oooh I could use some fantasy. which would you recommend? Lavondyss looks fascinating, but lighthearted sounds pretty great too

It's an essay/book about 'essays' (many of which are books); the last thing I expected was to be clinging to this like a floating board after a shipwreck, and I'm still trying to figure out why.

The analyses are fun, the prose glitters and sticks to you, it's deeply and personal felt...but it also feels utopian, and I think that's what I find myself so drawn to.

Under Ursula LeGuin's "Carrier-Bag Theory" {1}, ESSAYISM sometimes wishes it were a thrusting spear, but it is instead a self-conscious bag of contagious, wondrous, baubles, each one world of possibilities for how to think/write/think.

@cooler_ranch and before that happens we have to deal with the (deserved) criticism that just putting a blog post and a repo online isn't research without the citations and concern for historical precedents

@cooler_ranch I think it'll happen as the center-of-mass of research discourse / recognition moves towards preprints and public places, as has been happening with NNs. But it'll take at least 10 years/ two tenure cycles before the people doing that kinda work can start imposing it as a norm, even in very computational disciplines

@cooler_ranch good news is, once FLOSS practices and ethics get embedded in academic practice they'll last through decades of continued capitalist assault

@cooler_ranch it's more about the meme / buzzword / citation shtick. academics who care about open source / code reuse generally learn and nurture that care outside of the university

@cooler_ranch yuppp sounds like research-code smell. (my main FLOSS project and I are mostly in academia, so I've had to wander through altoghether too much non-idiomatic python doing very clever maths without explaining it)
