(The first time you saw the dusty print of bird on the glass, you smiled sympathetically. Poor thing; probably young and confused by windows. By the fourth or fifth time, you were worried. A fresh print every morning, though you never saw the bird. Finally you bought some of those window-stickers - hawk silhouettes to keep the birds away.
It worked: clean windows this morning. But when you look in the bathroom mirror there's a dusty bird-print, and when you rub the glass it doesn't come off.)

@vampirestar as a complementary story, just used a nice microscope to look at animal/plant tissue for the first time (my highschool didn't have 'em) and it's better than I expected, that same sense of awe and potential as when I first saw Jupiter through a telescope. there's still some magic left in the soil, just enough to justify the centuries of dreaming
