1) to edit individual bytes of a file by use of a hexadecimal display.
2) to edit code through a complex series of chained hexes (see also: vim).
3) to hex and/or curse a texteditor of type (2) for its idiosyncracies.
4) to edit the hexes of (3) so that the texteditor returns to functionality.
