Lol that happens so much! People insist that Stalin killed this huge number of innocent people, but the more you look at it, the more you realize he was really only killing fascists. Most of the rest of the deaths they blame on him are from "genocides" and shit that never actually happened, like the Holodomor.

The really twisted thing is that believing the Holodomor happened is actually a kind Holocaust denial; the "man-made famine" that never occurred was the Nazis' primary justification for invading the USSR and enacting the Holocaust.

It always makes me laugh when people call tankies "Stalinists" in such a negative tone, as if Stalin was bad. He fought the Nazis diligently and successfully, and not because of some Pearl Harbor incident, but because the USSR of that era was the greatest force for good in the history of the planet.

Anyway, one book in this vein that I really liked was by Douglas Tottle; it very convincingly shows that the Holodomor never happened, and documents the fascists from Western countries that manufactured the myth. I actually have a link to a PDF:

I only talk about it frequently because it's become a more common term on social media lately; it's often used as a general insult for Marxist-Leninists who support communist governments (USSR, DPRK, Cuba, Venezuela). Since western anti-communist propaganda is all smoke and mirrors, it's one political area where I feel it's genuinely worth it to engage with some people online and try to educate them.

@genoskill Ugh, it's something I loathe to introduce people to because it makes me cringe, but a "tankie" is a person (such as myself) who believes it was right for the USSR to send tanks into Hungary to crush fascist uprisings. It's based on critical analysis of the way Western historiography has warped our view of the USSR, typically by misrepresenting their involvement in WWII.

You know what's funny about people who call others "tankies" to insult them? Using that word seriously in the first place demonstrates that their understanding of Holocaust historiography is based on Western propaganda. You're trying to discredit a person's ideas, but all you're doing is showing that you can't research your way out of a paper bag.

This 1971 English abridging of the Ramakien (Thai version of the Ramayana) is incredibly entertaining, but omg Thai transliterations then were even worse than they are now.

For example, it frequently uses the letter "p" to represent two separate sounds:

พ/ภ/ผ aspirated bilabial, such as in "pin"
ป unaspirated bilabial, such as in "spin"

The letter "p" makes both sounds in English, but they are mutually exclusive in Thai. พ/ภ/ผ should be "ph", while ป should be "p" or, even better, "bp".

Hearing someone call a woman a "female" is one of my biggest pet peeves. It's absolutely unacceptable, even in scientific contexts where people often get a pass on this issue.

FEMALE HUMAN BEINGS ARE CALLED WOMEN, that is how our language works. Referring to a woman as a "female" semantically deprives her of her humanity.

I really can't stress enough that this applies equally to scientific language, as that is the excuse people always use to defend this practice.

Terf ideology has nothing to do with "tankie" ideology, so to literally claim that "tankies are another flavor of terf" is incredibly reductive. Using the word "tankie" with no trace of irony is cringey enough as it is.
