I like XML because it's design principles place recording information above storing or transmitting data and those are my priorities also
say i have a mediæval manuscript and i want to digitize it exactly as presented in a plain-text, searchable and processable form while also glossing abbreviations and recording line-breaks, page numbers, illustrations, defects in the text, marginal notes, etc. there's really only one technology that is good at this!
