Rosa Astra @morganastra@witches.town

@morganastra this is a night heron. Lake Merritt is one of their important breeding areas, they live here year-round in much more concentrated numbers than in most of their range. they're pretty silly and out of their element in the urban environment, but also not very afraid of humans so they'll let you get close to photograph them sometimes.

y'all we need to stop having cops

@Stoori no, it's not comparable to the social construction queerness

@Stoori what you're describing now is more like a religion than a scientific hypothesis. that's more honest, and people can believe whatever they want to privately.

but it is vastly more healthy for people to base their sense of self-worth on their inherent humanity, their resilience in the face of adversity, their relationships with others, and their experiences and accomplishments rather than on a misguided sense of superiority.

@Stoori it's not analogous to height. the height of the various body parts are generally static (measuring twice in a day will produce the same result), are measurable in the same units, are comprehensively enumerable, and vary along the same axis. thus, summing them is meaningful.

the factors that are combined into the iq have none of these properties. it's more like defining a "body quotient" as hair length + left quadricep mass + blood glucose level. it's meaningless and should not be used

@Stoori sorry, you're mistaken. the "intelligence quotient" test is the closest thing to what you're describing, and it was generally discarded decades ago because it's results are internally contradictory and show various correlations with things the hypothesis of generalized intelligence would require it not to be correlated to

@Stoori nope, as i explained above, human cognitive abilities vary on too many axes for a concept of generalized intelligence to be meaningful

people can be more or less skilled at particular types of reasoning or analytical frameworks, they can have more or less knowledge about a topic, and they can be more or less willing to change their mind in the face of new evidence or logical errors. people can have cognitive differences that make those easier or harder.

but people are not more or less intelligent. don't criticize people by appealing to a concept of generalized intelligence, it's just inaccurate (in addition to being ableist)

Summer (La Belle Saison) [2015], 5/5 stars for the fantastic lesbian love story in the first 95 minutes, -4.5/5 for the totally pointless deus ex machina adherence to the "no lesbian movie shall ever have a happy ending" rule in the final 10, so, 0.5 stars don't waste your time

be more gay and more communist in 12018

what joker decided to call it "atheism" and not "nilitarian universalist"

@Ricardus it would be a hell of a stretch to construct a scenario in which those two were opposed in any substantive way

@IrisKalmia seems related to me but best to open a possible-duplicate issue and work with the maintainers to triage

hello I'd like to file a bug report against "futurism"

what i expected: dreaming about the potential of humanity. fully automated luxury gay space communism. the abolition of whiteness, cisness, maleness, and neurotypicality

what i got: boring men vapidly fawning over elom nusk
