@deshipu the day to day decision of how to commute does not in practice involve coordination or communication for most people. the analytical framework the prisoner's dilemma provides is useful here

@Ayior those cities make very heavy use of mass transit. bikes aren't a replacement for mass transit, they just augment it (or augment walking). that said, infrastructure development for transit should prioritize pedestrians and bikes too, i just didn't have enough characters to include them!

urban transportation is a prisoner's dilemma. if everyone uses transit, everyone gets to their destination quickly and smoothly. if some people defect and take cars, their trips are faster at the expense of everyone else. if everyone defects, everyone ends up parked in traffic.

the solution is to remove the individual benefits of defecting, by prioritizing infrastructure for transit and banning cars in urban centers. most US cities do the opposite, and that's why getting around is so miserable

@diamaterialista huh, I'm surprised those things don't just work these days. audio stuff used to be deeply awful but ime it's been pretty effortless for the last few years

@diamaterialista tbh the reason i use arch is that random things break way less often than any other OS or distro i've tried to use

@jamey oh i never said it would be completely trivial, just that the federation wouldn't really be the hard part. github has steadily grown a lot of really useful features over the decade it's been a thing, and it would be painful to replace it with something that lacks the one you use

@diamaterialista oh cool, i hope you've found it useful :)

@kara I had a human run going in which I had like three different communist parties that were all hella happy as my only significant factions and a federation encompassing half the galaxy, and then one of the fallen empires woke up and just entirely fucked up our shit, I can't bring myself to open that save file anymore and starting a new game seems really daunting

keep wanting to play Stellaris, keep feeling like i don't have enough time to even launch the game lol
