update: the "vegetarian pasta" was indeed pasta with some vegetables on it. it was comparable to a half portion of what i would make for myself on my laziest days, but priced like fancy restaurant fare

@varx california is theoretically developing a high speed rail link between LA and SF which will do the trip in ~2 hrs, but that project seems interminably delayed

@alyx the new hot thing is wireless corded lights, which come on a cord for convenience of hanging but communicate with each other over bluetooth and draw power from ambient sound

(I should mention that this is the ONLY rail link between the two most populated urban areas in California, not some out-of-the-way scenic mountain train or something)

this brought to by the Amtrak Coast Starlight, a train which takes 12 hours to travel 746 km, just to give you an idea of how bad transportation is in the US if you didn't already know

on the plus side, i was able to make a dinner reservation for myself to "intake nutrients" in the form of a "vegetarian pasta" which the host delectably described as "well it's pasta, with some vegetables on it"
