whoah, rippers have already gone to the trouble of engineering their own file format which incorporates the code and data responsible for a game's music (http://ocremix.org/info/GBS_Format_Specification)
of course there are whole databases of GBS files and even sleek players (http://rmconway.com/ostrich/)

@morae gotta love these kinds of file formats, where it's pretty much just the game's own code running (heck, i actually created my own nsf file from an nes rom once).
@devurandom yeah it seems like it evolved as a way for rippers to just be like "look I found the music code" and share it around
