somehow "hmm i should go to bed" became "hmm i should read about the sound control registers on the game boy CPU"
currently resisting the urge to start scrolling through rom dumps to try and find their music engines
oh nooo I started staring at hexdumps of GBS files
go to bed, me
@morae gotta love these kinds of file formats, where it's pretty much just the game's own code running (heck, i actually created my own nsf file from an nes rom once).
@devurandom yeah it seems like it evolved as a way for rippers to just be like "look I found the music code" and share it around
so good
whoah, rippers have already gone to the trouble of engineering their own file format which incorporates the code and data responsible for a game's music (http://ocremix.org/info/GBS_Format_Specification)
of course there are whole databases of GBS files and even sleek players (http://rmconway.com/ostrich/)
the internet is cool sometimes
