@amphetamine ugh. it's just so frustrating. i know people keep telling me "that's just how it is" and "most companies are like that" as if that's a reason to accept it

EVERYONE would benefit from exchange and feedback and workflows. why is that so much to ask apparently?

I'm p sure I'll always have trouble in my work life because things like this frustrate me and get me off balance so much. i can be really motivated for work but not if workflows are made so hard because i NEED some structure and some way to contribute meaningfully

i know nobody can change that, but. i hate that is just taken as a given thing and you're naive to want to change

@mimtschan @amphetamine I wouldn't say it's a given thing that you're naive to want to change. what it means is that this is something specific to look for when looking for work and applying for jobs. yeah, a lot of shitty companies does this wrong, because capitalism is the death of good. but you can find places that do it relatively right, I know, I'm at one of them.

so don't give up hope darling.

@nergdron @amphetamine thank you. 💜 that's kind of the encouragement i need, that it is possible, because if everyone just keeps telling me that I'll have to just accept that things are shitty, that... makes me really disheartened and question whether I'm ever going to find the right thing for me. sigghh

@mimtschan @amphetamine yeah. it's not the default, but it's certainly out there. and that's the nice thing about there being a big demand for tech workers, once you've got a little experience you can afford to be more picky.

@nergdron @amphetamine gosh true, that's a good thing to think about. I'm pretty sure i can be good at this. i just need an environment where I'm allowed to grow.

@mimtschan @amphetamine yeah. I'm not saying it's easy to find. but it's definitely possible. signs I've learned to look for are:

- diversity on the engineering team, not just the company itself.
- especially women, gays, and people of colour.
- ask about anti-discrimination, harassment, and other similar social policies when talking HR stuff in interviews. if they have to think about the answers to those questions, it means they aren't serious about solving those problems.
- ask about process about tech decisions. are they dictated by some cis het white man at the top? or does the team make decisions about technical direction?

@nergdron @amphetamine lol. that's really hard to imagine around here. i want to believe the company I'm applying to might value a bunch of these things, but they haven't answered me anymore and now I'm worried sighhh
