apparently it counts as negative for participation if i look at my phone during class. ok participation is 20% of the grade which i will get 0 marks then, fuck that i don't really care mate
@morae aww. well i had some teachers at school who let me do that (funnily enough, i also had a knitting phase once) but a lot of them never understood why i didn't participate and tried again and again to kind of make me. at uni that's not so much of a thing but there's still that notion that participation should be part of class. i just really dislike that and i always feel a bit left out :<
@morae yeah, that too D: but i even feel IF teachers try to take into consideration that people learn in different ways, the school system itself is just too limited, esp in its ways to evaluate ppl :///
(sorry, I'm really anti-school tbh and feel like it honestly taught me next to nothing 🙈 but i always surcharge teachers who try and make the best of it and are actually interested in teaching and not just... authority)
what are you going to teach? :3
@mimtschan I am in a CS PhD program and I hope to be research/teaching faculty some day! My current area of research is molecular programming but I also like computer architecture and programming languages :333
@morae that's so cool!! I'm like on the entire opposite of computer science because i wanna have as little to do with research as possible 😄 (like, personally. because i don't want to do it)
what is molecular programming actually? 🤔
@mimtschan research isn't fun for everyone and that's ok!
molecular programming is concerned with performing computation at the molecular level. in my case I study using synthetic DNA as a medium for storage and computation! it's uh, kind of trippy.
@morae whoa that sounds hella cool though tbh
@mimtschan I hear ya. I hope to be a teacher one day and like, I will never have a participation score.
I dunno, maybe teachers need a "first do no harm" like doctors -- "first assume good faith"? Assume everyone is trying to learn.
