If you're wondering what irt the project itself I'm doing at this very moment, I'm currently writing scripts to parse CAN bus signals that we grabbed from a live tractor, that we aim to deconstruct and use to spoof a boot-up to a refurbished ECU that's not been talkative to basic probing attempts. (The actual signals are more elaborate than just "CAN bus", there's another protocol going on underneath, although it's a proprietary format I'm not at liberty to share without risking said rabid teams of lawyers making a move)

As for not being eaten by a rabid team of lawyers, we're currently sheltered under a DMCA exemption, and we've got the aid of a pro-repair company at our backs in case anything goes south. I'll shoot you a link when things are said and done!

I'm working as part of a small group to decode the various signals that come from each Control Unit (In automotive terms these are the E(ngine)CUs, but in a system such as a tractor these control units are often subdivided further and even more specialized, like specifically for transmission, or arbitrating the other control units) - the project itself is fairly open-ended, and small in timescale, but we aim to reverse-engineer the signals needed to authorize new components and perform other tasks that would otherwise require a John Deere technician.

I'm reminded of that one "USB killer" thing that attempts to destroy/damage the computer it's inserted into by overvolting the usb port, and people using it on others to feel cool

oof I'm tired to the point that my mental kinetic model of my own body is having some strange mismaps, causing me to feel like I'm always wearing a hat
