Maybe you could try tinkering with some components and a bread-board, alongside an electronics book with examples, to build a more visual/physical intuition of how things work? or is this suggestion overlooking something important/obvious

@marlyn yeah, I could never figure out where to buy components (other than places with 8000% markup), can't really afford to spend a bunch of money on gear, don't have a specific project to work on (or a sense of what kind of project would be feasible), have irrational concerns about breaking stuff, don't really have a usable workspace, etc
