good god, this is the most player-hostile interface i've ever seen. this looks like a joke about computer games from a 1990s console game magazine. this entire list of commands should be collapsed into two: use and equip.
if you use a useable item (scrolls, potions, wands, books, food) it uses it. if you equip an equippable item (armor, ring, amulet, armor, weapon) it flips its "currently equipped" state to on or off.

Then again, with wands, those generally also have an "aiming" prompt, which can be considered another different input menu - I wonder, how feasible it would be to restructure DF's menus to be more accessible in a fashion similar to how Brogue does it? I know that as things stand, the "labor" menus are a lost cause, and people rely on DwarfTherapist in its place for managing job permissions on a decent-sized fort.
