fun fact, the red dragon compiler book mentions the troff workflow they used for the entire book (eqn, tbl, pic, etc. with make and sed for various other project management tasks).
of course the heirloom implementation of troff works much better than the gnu project version. it actually behaves in line with what the guides say.
