moles are also valuable in north america for eating invasive, damaging species such as cutworms and japanese beetles! they get blamed for damaging lawns, but that doesn't take into account the benefits of their eating habits. they don't just eat bugs, their tunnels also help aerate the soil!

on the topic of how cool star-nosed moles are, they can actually smell underwater by exhaling bubbles and then sniffing that air!

did you know that star-nosed moles take an average of 25 ms touching and inspecting a potential food item? they're so fast that they're near the limit of their nervous system's ability to process and respond to stimuli. the neurons in their brain take 12 ms to respond, and the corresponding motor command is estimated to take 5 ms.
