I think the big thing is report handling should be made easier for admins, it should be clear to them that say a user has been blocked by 100 different people, or has received 100 reports (including reports from other instances)
also an admin should be able to see which outside instances are the source of the most reports, so they can decide if they still want to federate with a problem instance

@spiderrobotpig @whatthegeek @b agree with all of the concerns above (though 1 should absolutely happen!). i think some sort of community moderation system, akin to league of legend's tribunal, could work really well here.

mastodon.social, It wasn't great because you were special people, immune from social ills. It wasn't because your CoC (that I wrote in part) said "no Nazis". It wasn't because the original Support team (that I started) was somehow blessed. It's because you were slow and mostly empty.
Well, mastodon.social, you scaled. You have media attention now. You have people now. No surprise, you have harassment now.
You need around-the-clock dedicated abuse response now or it's just gonna get worse.
FRIENDLY REMINDER
These instances are not run on commercial servers that proprietary companies can afford. More often than not, these are hobbyists running an instance for the benefit of Mastodon.
DO NOT SPREAD WORD OF MASTODON WITHOUT CLARIFYING THIS. If you do, everyone coming will flock to Mastodon.social, which puts a strain on that one instance and makes it look bad. There are other instances for a reason.
Other than that small preparation, be sure to donate to your instance admin.

Like, most of the complaints I've heard trying to convert marginalized groups (especially black people and PoC) to Mastodon is that it's extremely white, and there aren't a lot of marginialized groups working on it.
This is objectively better than twitter, but I think that would help so much honestly.

I honestly think having more Black People/PoC/LGBT people working on the Mastodon code would be good. Really any marginalized group.
Given that harassment is rampant everywhere, we would have good insights that a cishet allo white guy might not tbh
