@DialMforMara cuff and heel, sorry
@DialMforMara yup! it's a self striping yarn designed to give you matching socks, so there's colour changes to indicate where the and heel should happen. "Schachenmayr Regia Pairfect" is the yarn name
@medras thank you!
@eggshellsailor yeah it's not actually that hard! you can get fancy with it if you want (and if you don't use food-safe dyes it gets more complicated) but you can get great results just with this. I'd suggest starting with some cheaper yarn the first time just in case though 😛
oh, and this will only work for protein fibres (ie animal fibres, like wool). cellulose fibres (ie plants, like cotton) won't take this kind of dye

5. roll up the yarn in the clingfilm so the different colours don't run
6. microwave in a covered dish for ~6min, flip yarn then do another 6min
7. let it cool slowly in covered dish
8. when cool, rinse until it doesn't smell like vinegar any more
9. dry flat
10. rejoice and show it off on the internet
@eggshellsailor cool! ok so:
1. if I'm dyeing yarn for socks, I hold it doubled and knit it into a blank - this gives me 2 balls of identical yarn, and lets me do things like gradients and self striping yarns
2. sock the yarn overnight in vinegar (usually I do about 1:4 vinegar:water)
3. spread yarn out on a sheet of clingfilm
4. apply dye - I usually use a spoon or a sponge brush, and I usually mix the food colouring with water in bowls. if you're going to dye a bunch of yarn, I"d suggest getting food colouring from a baking store - you can get really big bottles of it. the tiny bottles from the grocery store are expensive!
[running out of space...1/2]
@eggshellsailor you should! it's really fun. I can give you a run down of my dyeing process if you like?
@eggshellsailor haha, fair enough! I find some years I knit like 10km of yarn, and other years almost nothing (I'm currently on an "almost nothing" year)
I'm not sure when I'll be knitting this yarn up (I have ....a lot of sock yarn...), but I can show you what the dyed sock blank looked like: https://witches.town/media/ikpMLh9ySmdqvuor3dY
@eggshellsailor thank you! it's actually just food colouring haha
I was trying to do a gradient, so I'll have to knit it up to see how well it turned out
@tricycles thank you! I love self striping yarn
@eggshellsailor fair enough - sock yarns are a dangerous hole to fall into
but, if you like bright sock yarn, let me show you: some yarn I dyed: https://witches.town/media/3KksePfa5nKN0Ghuu0Y
@eggshellsailor thank you! are you a knitter? I can look up the yarn name and colourway if you want!
made some progress on my sock last night
@distelfliege ooooh yes very good call
@distelfliege I haven't made many shirts, but it looks like it'd work for a flannel sort of shirt?
