I'm thinking about making a timeline of my various life events bc I've been finding it hard to remember the order of things sometimes, and I'd like something to refer to. I want to include major things, like when I started dating my girlfriend, but also stuff like when I started using linux and when my favourite colour switched.
I want it as a hard copy, maybe as a notebook? I've kept diaries sporadically in the past, but I tend to veer really hard into recording absolutely everything that happens and getting stressed when I miss stuff. but I think this would be low key enough I wouldn't get stuck in that.
@linen
That does sound like a pretty good idea
I find that as I'm getting older (at least, older than being a teenager), I realize that I start to lose track of the order of events of stuff in my life - and since my means of understanding history works by series of cause and effect, I suspect that losing that understanding really injures my ability to "process" time, making things seem faster than they should
perception is weird yet fascinating, although I can only speak for myself on how one perceives things
Maybe I'll give this a try, and see how it works out, then
@crazylemon huh, that's an interesting idea! I'd agree that I perceive time as running faster than I used to, but I feel like a big part of that for me is just having a really regular routine - if nothing of note really happens in a day, it sticks out less as time passing and a week can just kind of blend together.
do give it a try! it'll give me motivation to actually do it myself, haha. are you thinking of using a notebook as well?
@linen
Normally I prefer using a computer, because then I'm able to freely edit/rearrange entries/information. Though, with something of this nature (that is, a personal log, rather than notes on a given topic), I think it might be better off if I use a hard copy instead?
If anything, I'd like to keep a log of my actions and experiences "off the grid" - these days, I can hardly trust anything stored on a computer to remain confidential.
@crazylemon yeah, I mean, I'm going to use a notebook because I'm deeply in love with notebooks, but this does seem like the sort of thing where an ongoing file would work really well. editing is definitely an advantage!
you could always encrypt it - idk about other systems, but ubuntu had a really easy to use encryption tool which would let you encrypt anything in a directory. computer security is kind of the worst in so many ways, but it's better than nothing.
@linen
🤔 you can't get hacked if you don't use a computer
Though, I have been doing something similar already, logging the dreams I've been having, in order to try and make lucid dreaming in the future easier, as well as being able to remember my dreams better in general. Albeit, I think I've kind of fallen behind on that, oops, but I'll pick up on that again now
@crazylemon you've solved it! or just have a computer you never connect to the internet, or plug any flash drives into, or attach a microphone to, or, or, (computer security makes me so so tired)
I tried logging my dreams for a while, but a lot of my dreams are heavily plotted science fiction dystopian nightmares, and it turned out I didn't actually want to remember them :/ have you had much luck with lucid dreaming?
@linen
No luck so far, but I've not given up
the closest I've had to a lucid dream so far is flutter-kicking into actually flying around town, it was a pretty silly dream tbh (but then most dreams are, aren't they)
@crazylemon you'll get there! I've done it twice I think - one time I fell asleep on a slightly swaying garden swing, and I think the movement may have helped? I demanded "elephants!" and there was a stampede of elephants
flying dreams are the best! you flutter-kick to fly? I've heard everyone dreams of flying differently - I sort of fall a bit and catch myself with my arms to swoop forward.
@linen
Not normally, it's just that it's the one dream I remember in which I was like "I wanna do a thing!" and then I did the thing
As my ability to fly in that dream refined, it became more like "focusing really hard on jumping" instead, although I don't really remember any other details of that dream
@crazylemon ah, that sounds really cool! speaking of dreams, I think it's time for me to head to bed, but I've enjoyed talking to you tn 🙂
@linen
yeah, I've gotta sleep too. Sweet dreams! 😋
my girlfriend knows how long we've been dating, but I Do Not and I feel bad about it lol (it just keeps getting longer so it's very confusing)
